What's an Urgent Care Center?
UPPER VALLEY URGENT CARE CENTER
|

An urgent care center is like a local neighborhood minor emergency room. It
can manage most of the routine minor illnesses and injuries that occur for the
average population. Urgent care centers offer medical care when you want it,
on your schedule. They are designed to get you in and get you out and on your
way, to save time and to save money for the consumer and the insurers.
However, an urgent care center is not a substitute for a hospital emergency
room and individuals should not try and use them for potentially serious medical
illness or injuries as urgent care centers are not staffed with multiple nurses and
physicians nor do they have CT scans and access to the other sophisticated
equipment and resources of a hospital. When in doubt, go to the hospital
emergency department. Urgent care centers are for minor injuries or illnesses!

Urgency versus Emergency: What’s the difference?
Emergency: is a medical illness or injury that could lead to disability or death if
not treated immediately. In a word, “Call an ambulance and go to the
Emergency Department of the nearest Hospital!” Examples include possible
cardiac chest pain, possible strokes, black-out episodes, severe abdominal
pains, pregnancy related bleeding or pains, seizures, injuries as a result of
major falls or automobile or all-terrain vehicle accidents, particularly head
injuries and when an individual has been ejected from the vehicle. As a general
rule, individuals with multiple medical illnesses or injuries are also better served
by going to a hospital emergency department due to the complexity of their
health status. Illnesses and injuries that are this severe require evaluation at the
nearest hospital emergency department.
Urgency: is a minor medical illness or injury that would be unlikely to lead to
disability or death if not treated within twenty-four hours but that shouldn’t wait
longer. Examples include illnesses with fever such as sore throats, coughs,
sinus congestion, vomiting and diarrhea, minor abdominal pains, bladder
infections, cuts, burns, sprains, strains, minor eye infections, and fractures of
small bones of the arms and legs.
